- Engine Block
-
- Manufactured in one
- piece, the engine
- block contains
- water jackets that
- are cast into the
- block and cylinder
- head. At normal
- operating
- temperatures, the
- water pump forces
- coolant through the
- head gasket
- openings into the
- water jackets in
- the cylinder head.
- Coolant flows
- throughout the
- jacket, absorbing
- heat. Then, the
- coolant flows
- through the upper
- hose to the
- radiator where it
- releases the heat
- to the surrounding
- air. Finally, the
- water pump returns
- the coolant to the
- engine's water
- jackets and the
- process repeats.
-
- To assist in the
- cooling process,
- freeze or expansion
- plugs on the
- engine's sides are
- designed to hold
- cooling system
- pressure, and to
- pop out if the
- coolant in the
- block ever freezes.
