  4. piece, the engine
  5. block contains
  6. water jackets that
  7. are cast into the
  8. block and cylinder
  9. head.  At normal
  10. operating
  11. temperatures, the
  12. water pump forces
  13. coolant through the
  14. head gasket
  15. openings into the
  16. water jackets in
  17. the cylinder head. 
  18. Coolant flows
  19. throughout the
  20. jacket, absorbing
  21. heat.  Then, the
  22. coolant flows
  23. through the upper
  24. hose to the
  25. radiator where it
  26. releases the heat
  27. to the surrounding
  28. air.  Finally, the
  29. water pump returns
  30. the coolant to the
  31. engine's water
  32. jackets and the
  33. process repeats. 
  34.  
  35. To assist in the
  36. cooling process,
  37. freeze or expansion
  38. plugs on the
  39. engine's sides are
  40. designed to hold
  41. cooling system
  42. pressure, and to
  43. pop out if the
  44. coolant in the
  45. block ever freezes.
